Day 1: FLIGHT TO MALTA - VALETTA
Meet at the airport and departure for Malta. Immediately after our arrival (the flight takes one hour and 20 minutes) at Malta airport, we will visit the famous capital of the Order of the Knights of St. John, Valletta, where we will take a walking tour, as cars are not allowed in the Old Town. Passing through the Floriana Gate, the landscape transports us back to the era of the Knights of St. John, with its stunning buildings, beautiful balconies with brightly colored wooden structures, chapels, and the impressive St. Publio Cathedral, which gives us a preview of the sights to come. It is time to visit the Triton Fountain and pass by one of the most luxurious hotels in the Mediterranean—the Phoenicia, an excellent choice for a drink in a setting of unique elegance and beauty. Everything around us has been renovated by the unique architect Renzo Piano. Valletta welcomes us to a complex of buildings, 70 meters above sea level, with walls and towers, moats, and battlements that compose an image of a medieval city-castle, the cultural capital of Europe in 2018, which you will not find anywhere else in the world! Our goal on the first day is to get as comprehensive a view of it as possible. The “auberges” (mansion residences) of the Knights of St. John, the Opera House building destroyed by bombing during World War II, Our Lady of Victory, the recently constructed parliament building, and the Prime Minister's office are just some of the sights we will admire before visiting the Baracca Gardens, one of the most beautiful spots in the capital with amazing views of the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities. St. John's Cathedral with its Caravaggio paintings will leave you speechless with its amazing interior decoration if you choose to visit the interior of the church. The central square with the Palazzo dei Cavalieri (Old Parliament) and the residence of the Grand Masters during the Order's reign (1530-1798), and the recently renovated covered market (Il Suq tal Belt) with its Maltese agricultural products are just some of the sights we will see. In your free time, we recommend that you walk through the narrow streets parallel and perpendicular to the main pedestrian street (Republic Street) and visit Strait Street with its atmospheric little cafes, Hastings Gardens, the St. Barbara Bastions neighborhood with its magnificent view of the harbor, and Fort Elmo at the most important point in Valletta (an old prison where the movie Midnight Express was filmed). Transfer to our hotel. According to Maltese law, rooms are available for check-in after 3:00 p.m. (midday). After some well-deserved rest, we will take an evening tour of the area.
Day 2: MOSTA – RAMBAT – MEDINA
After breakfast, we depart for a tour of the center of the island, with our first visit to the Cathedral of Our Lady of Mostra. We will then travel to the hill of Rabat to visit the silent city of Medina, which is fortified in an impregnable castle and was the capital of the island in the Middle Ages. We will walk through the cobbled medieval streets to see the main sights of the city. At noon, we will return to Agios Ioulianos, the central point of the island's social activity. Return to the hotel. Evening walk. Overnight stay.
Day 3: FREE DAY
Today is a free day for you to explore the island on your own, visit one of the capital's museums such as the Grand Master's Palace, the Museum of Contemporary Art, or St. John's Church. You can also visit the famous village of Popeye, the setting for the 1980 film of the same name, or even relax and enjoy a pastitsio accompanied by the local soft drink Kini.
Day 4: EXCURSION TO GOZO ISLAND
(OPTIONAL EXCURSION WITH A MINIMUM OF 15 PARTICIPANTS)
After breakfast, we set off on an optional full-day excursion to the enchanting island of Gozo. To reach the second largest island in the Maltese archipelago, we take the ferry and board the ferry boat. The exceptional beauty of the landscape, the magnificent houses and farmhouses, and the variety of sights you will encounter will surely convince you that your visit to the island of Gozo was well worth it. We will tour the capital city of Rabat, with its famous castle and old town. We will admire the wild beauty of the village of Sleti and visit the church of St. John the Baptist. Return to the hotel. Overnight stay.
Day 5: 3 CITIES - MARSAXLOKK
After breakfast, we will head to the amazing area of the Three Cities, a unique complex of architectural structures: castles, residences, and important buildings, built in a stunning location in the Grand Harbour. We will walk through the picturesque, cobbled streets of Birgu (or Vittoriosa), where time has stood still since the days of the Knights. We will admire the traditional houses and the first auberges (dormitories) of the Knights of St. John, pass by the magnificent churches of the area, and travel back in time. Then we will head to the south side of the island where we will visit the fishing village of Marsaxlokk with its famous open-air market and Malta's fishing fleet, as well as the traditional boats (luzzu). Transfer to Valletta for our last-minute shopping. Transfer to the airport for our return flight.
